Sew a pair of Christmas oven mitts with red cardinals perched among pine branches, holly berries and pinecones. One mitt has a forest-green cuff and the other has a cranberry cuff. Both coordinate with the Cardinal Christmas stockings and tree skirt.

Download the oven mitt sewing guide and full-size cutting template (PDF).
Print template pages 4–7 single-sided on 8½ × 11-inch US Letter paper. Select Actual size (100%) and turn off Fit to page. Measure the 1-inch square on each page, align the matching registration crosses, and tape the four pages together. Use the assembled template for the A pieces and flip it for the B pieces.
How to sew the panel
Save the printed instruction strip when you cut the four rectangular blanks. Quilt each blank with its lining and insulating layers first. Then use the separate full-size paper template to cut each mitt shape, sew the matching sides with a ¼-inch seam and bind the cuff.
Supplies to add for the pair
- Four 10 × 15-inch pieces each of cotton lining, Insul-Bright and 100% cotton batting. Both sides of each mitt use all four layers.
- One 2½ × 14-inch cotton binding strip per mitt. For hanging loops, add one 2 × 5-inch cotton strip per mitt.
- Matching thread and basic sewing supplies.
The purchase is one printed fabric panel. Cutting, quilting and sewing are required. Use the specified insulating layers and keep the finished mitts out of the microwave.
